Baby Fish Ingesting Plastic
Posted on 20 December 2019
The global plastic crisis is already well-documented, especially in the world’s oceans. Thousands of marine animals are mistakenly ingesting plastics, ending up with stomachs full of various plastic items.
Now, a new study shows that baby fish are being badly impacted by the problem. Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the US found that baby fish nurseries off the coast of Hawaii are full of plastics. In fact, there are seven bits of plastic for every fish.
Because there’s so much plastic in these nurseries, baby fish are confusing it for food. The scientists in the study examined fish larvae and discovered tiny bits of plastic in their stomachs. While the study only focused on regions in Hawaii, the experts involved in the study think that the issue might extend to other areas around the world.
