Ethiopian Pm Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Posted on 16 October 2019

The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, has won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize after his huge efforts to make peace with neighbouring country, Eritrea.

Ahmed is considered the main reason the 20-year struggle between Ethiopia and Eritrea ended. When he became Prime Minister in April 2018, one of his main goals was to work with the President of Eritrea to form a peace agreement. Both countries signed the deal in July 2018.

The conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea was one of Africa’s longest. It started with the two countries splitting many years ago, followed by a 1998 war over a small town located on their shared border. The battle became very violent but ended in the year 2000. Since then, both countries were in disagreement until Prime Minister Ahmed made peace last year.
