Fish Populations Are Going Down
Posted on 30 October 2019
While lots of countries have gathered to try and protect valuable fish supplies, new research has shown many governments are actually supporting damaging fishing operations.
Scientists from the University of British Columbia in Canada discovered that several countries spent a combined US$22 billion on harmful subsidies in 2018 – a 6 percent rise since 2009. These subsidies are basically designed to support overfishing and illegal fishing operations around the world. China alone has increased these kinds of subsidies by 105 percent over the past 10 years.
Lots of scientists and experts are calling for better laws around fishing to protect the oceans from illegal actions. While the research is pretty bad news for the oceans, they hope it will make governments act faster.
