Mountain Peaks Are Melting
Posted on 18 October 2019
Climate change has infamously caused ice shelves and glaciers to melt in Earth’s coldest regions, but now it looks like other parts of the environment are at risk: specifically, snowy mountain peaks.
In Sweden, the southern peak of Kebnekaise mountain has been melting away relatively quickly over the past 50 years. In that time, it has fallen by 24 metres. Over the last 10 years, it has dropped at a rate of one metre per year!
This phenomenon is affecting all kinds of icy areas and is showing no sign of slowing down, with temperatures only expected to increase. It’s just all the more reason to try and combat climate change!
