Saturn Will Eventually Lose Its Rings
Posted on 19 September 2019
Saturn is the most recognisable planet due to its famous rings. Unfortunately, Scientists believe Saturn is losing its rings, and they’ll probably have disappeared within 100 million years.
That doesn’t sound like a lot, but when considering that Saturn is around 4.5 billion years old, 100 million years isn’t a long time at all. On a smaller scale, if Saturn were only 100 years old, it would lose its rings roughly two years.
Scientists from NASA studied the rings and found that icy particles were being pulled in by Saturn’s gravity after being exposed to the planet’s magnetic field. This effect was then causing something called “ring rain”, which will eventually see the rings disappear.
