Taking Preschool Outdoors
Posted on 29 November 2019
The popularity of outdoor preschools has been increasing over the past few years, with Washington becoming the first US state to licence them this September.
Also known as forest preschools, they’re a type of early education that is conducted almost entirely outdoors. The goal is to connect children with nature and encourage exploration, curiosity and risk-taking. Lots of studies have proven that time spent in nature is really beneficial for children (and adults!) as it improves physical and mental health, and develops a range of skills.
The movement began in Scandinavia but has since spread across the world. Forest preschools are now located across Europe, the US, Australia and several other countries. In Australia, they’re commonly known as bush kindergartens.
