What Exactly is Self-Nudging?
Posted on 21 July 2020
Trying to make healthier choices can be really difficult sometimes, but self-nudging may just help make it that little bit easier.
It’s a behavioural science technique that involves preparing and planning for situations where self-control might be difficult. Instead of using willpower, which can be challenging for many people, self-nudging uses tiny changes to avoid temptation in the first place.
A good example is constantly checking social media for messages from friends and then wasting hours looking at a screen. One self-nudging technique is to turn off message notifications, which may remove the desire to look.
Tips for practising self-nudging include putting things out of sight or out of reach; making healthier items, like vegetables, easier to access; using prompts or reminders to encourage good habits; and asking friends and family for support.
