What is #TeamTrees?
Posted on 6 December 2019
Have you heard of #TeamTrees? Well, it might just be one of the most important campaigns when it comes to beating the climate emergency.
It was started by YouTube star Jimmy "MrBeast" Donaldson, who wanted to find a way to celebrate his milestone of achieving 20 million subscribers. He asked his followers for suggestions, and one put forward the idea of planting a tree for every subscriber. Then, together with other YouTubers and tree-planting nonprofit the Arbor Day Foundation, MrBeast launched the #TeamTrees campaign.
The point of #TeamTrees is to plant 20 million trees by 1 January 2020. For every $1 donated, the Arbor Day Foundation will plant one tree on every continent except Antarctica. So far, they’ve planted over 16 million trees since the campaign launched in late October. Even famous figures have jumped on board, with Elon Musk donating $1 million and PewDiePie donating over $69,000.
Trees are crucial in the fight against the climate emergency, as they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Sadly, millions of trees have been cut down to make way for buildings, farms and other human activities.
