Most people are aware that healthy foods are good for their body, but did you know they can help your brain, too?
The brain uses around 20% of the calories consumed to fuel itself! But which foods are best for it?
1. Dark chocolate
Dark chocolate contains antioxidants called flavonoids, which provide lots of benefits. They may help prevent decline in the brain, as well as brain diseases, and they may also assist in providing more blood to the brain.
Berries like blueberries, strawberries and black currants have flavonoids too, as well as lots of other antioxidants. These have been found to help brain cells communicate and form new connections, which can make you better at learning and memorising things.
3. Oily fish
The more salmon or tuna in your diet the better, because oily fish is great for your mind! These kinds of fish contain omega-3s, which can help increase blood flow to the brain. Scientists have also found a link between omega-3s and a better ability to think.
4. Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds contain omega-3 and vitamin E, which protects your brain cells and can help keep your brain healthy as you get older. Scientists have also found that vitamin E might assist with reducing your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Broccoli contains glucosinolates, which are broken down by the body to produce isothiocyanates. These may help protect your brain from stress and lower the chance of contracting a disease that affects your brain. These benefits can also be found in cauliflower, brussels sprouts and cabbage.
